Copyright in Music and Lyrics

Peter Oxendale Music Services Ltd. provides expert advice on music copyright and related matters to clients. This includes all aspects of songs and instrumental works. We undertake detailed analyses of compositions. We advise on the copyright vested in the musical work (the “music”) and the copyright vested in the literary work (the “lyrics”).

Sound Recordings

We provide advice with regard to the copyright vested in the sound recording. We undertake detailed analyses of sound recordings in order to establish whether or not part or parts of one sound recording have been copied and directly interpolated into another sound recording by sampling.

Advertising, Films, Television and Media

We are frequently instructed by advertising agencies and production houses in the UK, as well as in numerous other territories in matters relating to “style-alikes” or “sound-alikes”. We also advise with re-recording issues, including whether works should be considered to be covers or new arrangements as well as numerous other matters relating to the licensing of copyright works for synchronisation purposes.

Joint Authorship

We provide advice to clients with regard to issues of joint authorship as well as advising in writer disputes and matters relating to the quality and quantity of compositional input. This includes matters relating to instrumental backing tracks or “beats” as well as vocal melodies or “top lines”.

We research into the copyright status of musical works and sound recordings throughout the world. We also undertake “prior art” research as well as Common or Public Domain research.
